Title Abstract

Parliaments' role in strengthening democratic institutions and human development in a fragmented world

Delegates at the 108th Inter-Parliamentary Conference, held from 6-11 April in Santiago, Chile, unanimously adopted this resolution which states that "volunteerism builds strong cohesive communities, encourages participation in the democratic process and reduces social tensions by forging a common view...” and expresses "...support for volunteerism and encouraging closer cooperation between the IPU and the United Nations Volunteers in this regard”.

   

International cooperation for the prevention and management of transborder natural disasters and their impact on the regions concerned

Unanimously adopted by the 108th Inter-Parliamentary Conference, this resolution calls on governments to “recognize the critical role of voluntary community-based and non-governmental organizations in disaster preparedness and response, and to facilitate their work, respecting their roles and principles, by enacting appropriate legislation”.

   

Follow-up to the International Year of Volunteers

United Nations General Assembly

This UN General Assembly resolution, co-sponsored by 142 Member States, calls upon stakeholders to support volunteerism as a strategic tool to enhance economic and social development and requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its 60th session on the implementation of the current resolution.

for Social Development

For the first time in the UN, a substantive discussion on the role of volunteerism in the promotion of social development was held at the 39th session of the Commission for Social Development. A meeting of a panel of experts, preceded the government debate. It resulted in a draft resolution subsequently adopted by the 46 members of the Commission.

United Nations General Assembly

This UN General Assembly resolution, co-sponsored by 60 Member States, calls upon states to promote an environment conducive to the discussion of the characteristics and trends of volunteer action in their own societies; calls for two plenary meetings of the 56th session of the GA to discuss volunteering on 5 December 2001 coinciding with the closing of IYV; and requests the Secretary-General to report on the outcome of IYV and its follow-up at the 57th session of the General Assembly.

This UN General Assembly resolution declaring 2001 the International Year of Volunteers designated the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, the volunteer arm of the UN, as the focal point. The objectives of the Year are increased promotion, recognition, facilitation and networking of voluntary action worldwide. The resolution was co-sponsored by 123 countries.
